Catalina Island is located in the Pacific Ocean, about 200 miles south of Los Angeles. It's one of the most popular tourist destinations in California, and is known for its pristine beaches, rugged mountains, and great scuba diving. The island was first inhabited by the Tongva people who lived there until 1769, when they were forced to leave by the Spanish. They were replaced by the Ohlone Indians. In the 1800s, Catalina Island became a private hunting preserve, and then a cattle ranch, until it was purchased by William Wrigley Jr., who turned it into a resort area. In the late 1930s, the Wrigley family donated the island to the city of Avalon. Today, it is owned by the City of Avalon, which manages it as a park.

 

The island has been called the "Jewel of the Pacific." It is surrounded by beautiful beaches, and the surrounding waters are filled with marine life. There are also many recreational opportunities, including hiking, horseback riding, golfing, swimming, fishing, boating, windsurfing, jet skiing, and snorkeling. In addition, there are several museums, aquariums, zoos, botanical gardens, and historical sites. The island is also home to two lighthouses, one of which is still used today.

 

The island is accessible by car or boat. Visitors can get to the island by taking Highway One from Los Angeles, or by ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point, or San Clemente. There are also a number of charter boats that will take you to the island from San Diego, Orange County, or other locations. You can also take a train from the mainland to the island.

 

The island is home to many attractions. Some of the most popular include:

 

• Avalon Landing - This is the main commercial center on the island. There are many shops, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses.

• Avalon Pier - This is where you can catch the ferry from the mainland.

• Castle Hill - This is a hilltop castle built by the Wrigley family in the 1920s. It is open to visitors.

• Lighthouse at the End of the World - This is a lighthouse that sits at the edge of the island.

• Avalon Botanical Garden - This garden features more than 3,000 different species of plants.

• Avalon Children's Zoo - This zoo features animals that are native to the area, as well as animals that have been brought to the island from around the world.

• Avalon Museum of Art and History - This museum features works by local artists, as well as a variety of artifacts from the island's history

• Avalon Municipal Golf Course - This is a public course that features 18 holes.

• Avalon Theatre - This is a small theater that features plays, concerts, and other performances.

• Avalon Village - This is a shopping area that features boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and other businesses.
